Jewellery Care Guide
Your Licensed to Charm jewellery has been lovingly handmade using high-quality recycled 925 sterling silver. With a little extra care, your favourite pieces will last a lifetime. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your jewellery looking beautiful and prevent common issues like tarnishing or green stains.
Cleaning Your Silver Jewellery
Silver jewellery can lose its shine over time, but a little maintenance goes a long way. Use a specialist jewellery cleaning cloth or cleaner to polish your pieces. Alternatively, gently clean your jewellery using lukewarm soapy water and a soft cloth or toothbrush. Avoid harsh abrasives as they can scratch the surface.
Protecting Your Jewellery
- Avoid exposing your jewellery to perfume, deodorant, and cleaning chemicals like chlorine.
- Remove your jewellery before showering, swimming, exercising, or sleeping.
- Store your pieces individually in a closed jewellery box or anti-tarnish pouch to prevent scratches and tangles.
- Keep jewellery away from extreme temperatures and humid environments to prevent tarnishing.
Why Does Silver Leave Green Marks?
If you’ve ever noticed a green stain on your skin after wearing silver jewellery, don’t worry—it’s a natural reaction. Sterling silver is an alloy made from 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. When the copper reacts with moisture, sweat, or skincare products, it can leave a harmless green residue on your skin. This is more common with rings, as they’re in constant contact with your skin and can trap moisture.
To prevent this, keep your jewellery dry and clean. Applying a thin layer of clear nail polish to the inside of rings can also create a barrier between your skin and the metal.
Oxidisation
Some Licensed to Charm pieces are designed with oxidised finishes to enhance their intricate details. Oxidisation is the intentional darkening of sterling silver. Be careful when cleaning oxidised jewellery, as silver cleaners may remove this finish, diminishing the charm’s unique detail.
Caring for Gold Vermeil Jewellery
Licensed to Charm offers selected pieces in 18ct gold vermeil—18ct yellow gold plating on sterling silver. Gold vermeil is more delicate than solid gold, and with regular wear, the plating may begin to fade. To prolong its lifespan:
- Keep gold vermeil pieces away from water, perfumes, and lotions.
- Clean with a soft, lint-free cloth but avoid using silver cleaners, as these can damage the plating.
- If your jewellery needs re-plating, contact us to learn more about our re-plating services.
Charms & Soldering
All Licensed to Charm charms are available with a lobster clasp or jump ring, making them easy to attach to your bracelets or necklaces. For children’s charm bracelets and pendants, we solder charms securely in place to prevent loss. If you’d like alterations or a different attachment, just let us know, and we’d be happy to help!
Warranty & Repairs
Your jewellery is covered by a 6-month warranty, which includes manufacturing faults, re-soldering, and re-plating. This warranty does not cover accidental damage or loss, so please handle your jewellery with care. To make a claim, retain your proof of purchase and contact us at help@licensedtocharm.com.
